FEL0
Opportunity identification and technology screening

Assessing whether MPD, PMCD, UBD or CTD can technically and economically address the anticipated drilling challenge. Early feasibility evaluations across the Middle East, South America and Asia, and initial screening for ultra-extended-reach development wells.

FEL1
Concept development and feasibility

Defining the drilling problem, evaluating alternative pressure-management concepts, establishing initial design premises, and identifying the equipment, modelling, risk-review and implementation requirements that follow from them.

FEL2
Concept selection and front-end engineering

Developing the selected concept through hydraulic and multiphase modelling, operating-envelope definition, equipment and rig-interface requirements, drilling and tripping strategies, risk reviews and implementation planning.

FEL3
Detailed engineering and execution readiness

Producing or reviewing detailed engineering, procedures, IMEs and operations matrices, MGS and RGH assessments, equipment integration, well-control interfaces, HAZID/HAZOP actions, regulatory documentation, training, commissioning and operational-readiness requirements.

Field development planning

Specialist well-engineering input supporting field-development planning: expected pressure-management and wellbore-stability challenges, preliminary drilling and tripping strategy, hydraulic-modelling and operating-envelope requirements, and the rig modifications, equipment, risk reviews, training and readiness activities implied by them.

Where it ends

The specialist drilling-engineering contribution — not ownership of the reservoir, facilities, commercial or overall FDP approval process.

AFEs, well costs, schedules and budgets

Preparing the technical, cost and schedule inputs that support AFEs and well-cost estimates: technical and economic feasibility, engineering and equipment definition, personnel, training, mobilisation and rig-integration requirements, tender and vendor-scope review, technical bid evaluation, equipment manifests, rig-up sequences and critical-path implications — and the cost and schedule consequences of alternative concepts.

Where it ends

The pressure-drilling scope and technical basis used in the AFE — not ownership of the complete well AFE, nor final approval authority for the operator’s drilling budget.

Engineering decisions should be supported by reliable data, validated models, operational observations and transparent reasoning.
